SAINT LEO, Fla. – In their final home game of the 2009 season, the Saint Leo lacrosse team sent their seniors out in style as they easily defeated visiting Florida Southern College 16-5 in a Deep South Conference game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon from University Field.

After honoring their seven seniors in a pregame ceremony, the Lions took the field ready to rid themselves of their two-game losing streak, but would come out of the gates slowly.

The first quarter was a bit of a see-saw battle for the Lions as they traded goals with the visiting Mocs. Kyle Marceau and Joe Guerin chipped in early goals for SLU, but the Moccasins would quickly answer as they kept the game knotted up to two.

Ben Brigham’s goal at 4:38 in the first quarter signaled a shift in momentum and was quickly followed by Luke Baruch and Guerin who added goals of their own.

The Lions would expand their lead in the second period as Brigham would do most of the scoring for Saint Leo by tallying two goals on his way to a four goal and two assist afternoon. Baruch, Guerin and Evan Mills would net goals of their own in the quarter as well.

The Green & Gold would run away with the game in the third and clinching quarter. Fittingly, it would be Dargon and Brigham scoring again for the Lions at Saint Leo posted a 13-5 lead as the teams moved into the fourth quarter.

Brigham would net a goal after a quick transition pass from Ryan Askerberg, and Dargon would score after a precision pass from Kyle Marceau.

Dargon would not be finished and would open up a scoring barrage in the fourth quarter. The senior would rack up two goals, one on an assist from Chris Storrie. Dargon would also hit a Mark Walczyk in the crease for an assist as the Lions shut the Mocs out in the final 15 minutes and finished off the conference win.

After early struggles on faceoffs helped the visitors from Lakeland, Fla. to keep the game tied, Mike Del Buono would come in to dominate the matchups for the remainder by going 16-21 and racking up an impressive ten groundballs.

Saint Leo will close out the 2009 regular season as they travel to Rollins College for a mid-week conference game in Winter Park.  The Lions and Tars will get underway at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
