Wingate, N.C. (April 8, 2008) – The Saint Leo University lacrosse team (6-7, 0-3 DSC) was downed 13-7 by No. 9 Wingate University (10-2, 3-0 DSC) in a Deep South Conference game Tuesday afternoon in Wingate, N.C.
Benjamin Brigham (Jr., Scituate, Mass.) led the Lions with four goals and one assist on the day. Wingate’s Kyle Costello led the Bulldogs with two goals and two assists in the game.
Saint Leo jumped out to an early lead, scoring the opening two goals of the game and eventually leading 3-1 after one quarter of play. Wingate then went on a run of unanswered goals, netting twice in the second quarter to tie the game at three at half-time.
The Bulldogs took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 6-0 to open up a 9-3 lead heading into the final quarter. Wingate added the first goal of the final quarter to stretch their run to nine unanswered tallies. Although Brigham scored each of his four goals in the final quarter, it was too late for the Lions to get back into the contest.
Saint Leo will return home to face Rollins College Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the make-up of the teams’ rained out contest earlier this season. The winner of Friday night’s Deep South Conference game between the Tars and Lions will advance to the DSC Tournament at Mars Hill April 18-20.
