Saint Leo, Fla. (March 15, 2007) - The Saint Leo lacrosse team (2-4) fell 8-7 in double overtime to Bentley College (1-0) in a non-conference game played at University Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Lions traded goals with Bentley throughout the first quarter with goals from Chris Storrie (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) and Justin Bednarz (Sr., Sayreville, N.J.). Despite eleven first quarter saves by goalkeeper David Erdman (Fr., Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), the Lions found themselves down 4-2 at the end of the first.

In the second Bentley continued to expand the lead by scoring two quick goals. The Lions answered with three straight goals from Ryan Groat (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.), Bednarz, Shane Viola (So., Arnold, Md.) and Ben Erhardt (Fr., Grand Rapids, Mich.). Erhardt’s goal came with only seconds remaining in the half and sent the Lions into the break even with the Falcons at 6-6.

The third quarter was a defensive stalemate by both sides.  Erdman led the Lion defense en route to his 22 saves by continuing his stellar play between the posts and the teams went into the fourth with the tie still intact.

The beginning of the fourth quarter picked up where the third had left off. Both sides continued great defensive performances with neither offense being able to find the net. The deadlock was finally broken with five minutes left in the game when Bentley scored the go-ahead goal. The Lions would answer and set up overtime when Nick Bova (Fr., Eureka, Mo.) scored the game-tying goal with just 3.7 seconds left in regulation.

Saint Leo appeared to have won the game in the first overtime period on a Ryan Harris (Sr., Vestal, N.Y.) goal, but the goal was disallowed as time had expired.  Just 1:17 into the second extra period, Bentley delivered the game-winning goal to seal the road win.

Saint Leo will return to action Saturday at 1:00 pm at University Field when the Lions play host to visiting Lees McRae College.
