SAINT LEO, Fla. –Nick Brothers was crowned the champion of the Florida Amateur Public Links Championship on Sunday afternoon from Lake Jovita when he prevailed in a sudden death playoff. Brothers finished the 54-hole tournament with scores of 65-73-70—208.
Brothers sunk a three-foot birdie putt on the 18th to finish his round with a score of 70 to force a sudden death playoff with Edward Figueroa.
The playoff started on the No. 18 where both Brothers and Figueroa made par. As the pair proceeded to hole No. 17, Brothers edged out the junior from Florida Gulf Coast by dropping in a four-foot birdie putt to win the tournament.
"I just kept telling myself to stay patient and keep doing what I've been doing," Brothers said after the round.
Brothers made a bogey on No. 4 to go one-over, but recovered wonderfully with birdies on No. 8, No. 9, and No. 11 to get back in contention.
"I figured I was out of it, but I got that three-foot birdie on 18 and ended up getting in the playoff."
Brothers got out to a fantastic start, carding a round of 65 in the opening round. Rounds of 73 and 70 allowed the recent Saint Leo graduate to remain in contention and eventually outlast the 80+ participants in the tournament.
