Men's Golf in Ninth Place After Opening Round of 'Bash at the Beach'

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –The Saint Leo men's golf team teed off in the opening round of the Bash at the Beach on Sunday amongst a stiff field of competition including 10 Division I teams. The Lions held their own in the opening round with a score of 306 and in ninth place.

"We are waiting for a team effort. We can't rely on one or two players," head coach Ray Cisbani said after the round. "If we do, we will have limited competition in events because our competition is too strong."

Nick Brothers was the leader among the Saint Leo pack—firing an even 71 in the opening round. Brothers' first round total was low enough to put him tied for 12th place on the individual leaderboard. Three strokes behind Brothers was Chaz Heinz who tallied a plus-three for a score of 74 in the first round of the tournament. Trevor Joseph was next in line as he carded a 77 in today's first round, and rounding out the Lions' first round scores was Austin Grey with an 84.

The Lions are 11 strokes behind both Western Kentucky and George Mason—who are tied for seventh place with a first round team total of 295.

Trailing the Lions by just two strokes is Wright State who totaled a 308 in the opening round. Leading the field of 11 teams is Radford who opened up the tournament with an impressive three-under 281.

The team gets right back on the course tomorrow for the second and third rounds and looks to make up some ground and move up the leaderboard.
