NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Saint Leo men’s golfer JP Albuquerque (77-75—152) continued his climb up the leader board Wednesday afternoon, carding a second round three-over 75 at the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships. He now stands in a tie for 22nd, nine strokes off the lead pace.
Leading the way at the par-72, 7,132 yard Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. is Queens’ Ben Lasso. Lasso hurdled over first day leader Ben Vertz, as well as a cast of others to claim first-place going into the third day of action. Lasso (73-70—143) was one of only two players on the day to shoot a two-under 70 and now leads the 105-player field by one stroke.
Fellow SSC institution Florida Southern (303-292—595) had a solid day on the links, shooting a team score of four-over 292. In the process of their day, the team hurdled yesterday’s top team and conference foe, Nova Southeastern. The Mocs improved 11 shots from their first round score of 303 and lead their closest competition by nine strokes.
As for Albuquerque, things started out much better for the senior on this day, as just three holes into the back-nine, he sank a birdie to drop to one-under. Two pars brought him to the difficult 15th, where the Londrina, Brazil native, unfortunately, double-bogeyed the hole. Still, Albuquerque remained resilient and answered the next hole with his third birdie of the tournament. He went into the turn with another birdie at 18 and a score of one-under.
The front nine was not as kind to Albuquerque, as he began the first two holes with back-to-back bogey's. However, he continued to fight through the deteriorating conditions, parring the next three. Now at one-over, Albuquerque alternated bogey and par scores over the final four holes to finish three-over for the day.
The senior is still very much in the thick of things as just five strokes separate him and a spot in the top-three.
Albuquerque returns to the course on Wednesday, May 20 for the third of four rounds at the NCAA Golf Championships. His tee-time is currently set for 12:30 p.m. EST.
