SAINT LEO, Fla. – Men’s senior golfer Mark McGuire was tabbed Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week, it was announced by SSC Commissioner Jay Jones Monday afternoon.

McGuire had a stellar weekend for the Lions, helping guide them to their fourth team championship of the 2009-10 year, and second of their 2010 championship season. It was the Lions second consecutive team title.

The Clifton, N.J. tamed the Par-71, 6,598 Yard El Campion Golf Course in HoweyInTheHills, Fla. with an outstanding second round. After shooting a five-over-par 75 in the first round, McGuire fired a second round two-under-par 69, to conclude the Missions Inn Spring Fling in first. He was one of two golfers to break 70 in the two-round event.

His two-day total of 145 (76-69) was one stroke better than Detroit’s Britt Ponk. McGuire finished on top of a list which included challengers from seven D I colleges and universities, as well SSC rival Tampa and Johnson and Wales.

The senior is also the first men’s golfer in program history to earn Player of the Week accolades. He is one of 22 spring student-athletes to be named a conference player of the week.

The Lions remarkable season will resume on April 5 when they travel to Miami Shores, Fla. to take part in the Buccaneer Invitational at the Normandy Shores Golf Course.
