TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s golf team found themselves atop the leaderboard after the final round on Tuesday as the Lions claimed victory in the University of Tampa Spartan Invitational played at the Rogers Park Golf Club.
The Lions posted a two-day 563 as their five-man group, led by Mark McGuire, outpaced the field, with the second-place University of Tampa posting a two-round 594.
The senior McGuire stormed back from a seventh place finish in the first round to win individual honors with a 73-64—137, shooting a school record 64 in the last round.
Seniors Cole Cisbani, who held the tournament lead after day one, finished second with a 69-69—138 and JP Albuquerque with a 69-72—141 placed third.
Junior Tom Lynn finished with a 73-74—147 and freshman Nick Brothers, experiencing his first tournament in the collegiate ranks, scored a 77-79—156.
Reflecting on his team’s first tournament, and the impressive win, Head Coach Ray Cisbani said, “What this tournament showed me was that the team is making progress in their short games. Mark had two chip ins and a 40 yarder for birdies, he made several putts over 25 feet that were momentum swingers, and he was able to stay composed as the birdie run continued.
Cole was extremely consistent with his shot-making hitting 31 of 36 greens, and hitting 20 of 28 fairways; JP was putting with confidence, averaging in the mid 20's for both rounds as well as multiple ups and downs to save par, and Tom Lynn was 3-over after the first five holes and played even par for the next 13.”
The Lions now turn their attention toward the familiar Saint Leo Invitational. SLU will host the tournament at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club as they will take to the course for the practice round on Sunday.
