VALDOTSA, Ga. – The Saint Leo men’s golf team followed up their impressive season-opening performance last week with a fourth-place finish in the 2009 Thomas University Winter Invitational hosted by Thomas University and played at the Kinderlou Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.

As a team, the Lions finished tied with South Carolina – Beaufort in the 13-team tournament.  Saint Leo shot a three-round 614 total, 16 strokes behind champion Darton Community College.  Berry College (Ga.) and host Thomas University also finished in front of the Lions on the nearly 7,000-yard course.

Individually, the Lions were led both days by Mark McGuire, who shot par the first day, and a 74 in the final round.  McGuire’s performance was good enough for the Silver medalist spot in the tournament as he tied with two other for second place.

Cole Cisbani, second on the team, finished in 25th-place overall (78-77—155) and Matt Cornuet finished in 29th (77-79—156).

Rounding out the Saint Leo contingent was Tom Lynn in 42nd (81-78—159) and JP Albuquerque who finished 50th (85-77—162).

The Lions were able to make adjustments between the first and second day as the responded from a 308 team score on the first day, to shoot 306 in the final round.

Saint Leo will practice for a few weeks before heading over to the PGA Village Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. for the Minnesota State Spring Invitational, hosted by Minnesota State University.  The Lions will tee-off Round 1 on Tuesday morning, March 10.
