Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (October 16, 2007) - The Saint Leo University men's golf team finished tied for 14th-place at the NSU Sharks Invitational, held at the par 72, 6,806 yard Haig course at the PGA National Resort and Spa on Tuesday afternoon. The Lions finished with a 54-hole team total of 946 (313-313-320).
Defending national champion and No. 12 nationally ranked Barry University held on to its second round lead and won by one stroke (886) over tournament host Nova Southeastern University (887) and Valdosta State University (887) who finished tied for second.
For the second consecutive event the Lions were led by junior Matt Cornuet (Sebring, Fla.) who finished in 17th-place individually with a three round total of 224 (74-74-76).
Valdosta State’s Brent Witcher finished atop the 75 player field, with a 54-hole total of 213. Witcher (-3) won the individual title, beating Nova Southeastern’s Greg O’Mahony (-1) by one stroke. Indianapolis’ Justin Hueber (E, 216) and Valdosta State’s Jason Flowers (E, 216) followed in a tie for 3rd place while Barry’s Carlos Velez (+1, 217) came in fifth.
Saint Leo will return to play when the Lions host the 2007 Saint Leo Fall Invitational at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club on Monday, October 22 and Tuesday, October 23. The event will feature a 36-hole opening day on Monday with an 18-hole final round on Tuesday.
