Men's basketball falls to Eckerd on senior night

SAINT LEO, Fla. – On the night where Saint Leo honored their five seniors – Necdet Gurkan, Trail Pierce, Justin Satchell, Elijah Blackman and Marcus Dewberry – inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center, the Lions and Tritons put on a show for the crowd in a close Sunshine State Conference matchup. Despite falling to Eckerd 88-82, Dewberry tied his career-high scoring 35 points with seven three-pointers on the night.

For the seniors, Marcus Dewberry scored 35 points, Justin Satchell scored 11 points as Trail Pierce and Elijah Blackman both tallied two points apiece.

"We talked about it at halftime, we told our guys they have to fight for the first five minutes of the second half and those were the key minutes," Head Coach Vince Alexander stated. "Right after we discussed with them about how important our possessions were in the first five minutes, we came out and turned the ball over in four of our first six possessions. It was a crucial error on our part."

"The outcome is unfortunate, but we are very proud of our seniors. What they have done not only on the court but for our program as a whole and Saint Leo," Alexander added.

How It Happened…

1H | After falling behind by three within the first 2:40, the Lions charged back and took a seven point lead which was their largest lead of the game. The Tritons whittled that away and took a 17-16 lead with 12:30 to play before maintaining their lead until the 8:57 mark when the Lions retook a lead of 28-27 on a Marcus Dewberry three-pointer. Eckerd reversed the role on a Lions' drought to take a quick six-point lead twice with 7:05 to play and again 4:25 to play, 37-31. The Lions closed the first half on a 15-2 run to take a seven-point lead into the break, 46-39. At the half, Dewberry owned just under half of the Lions points as he had 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor and 6-of-10 from downtown. Tyreece Brice joined him in double-figures with 10 first half points. | Saint Leo 46-39 |

2H | Eckerd came out of the break and opened up the second half on an 8-2 run to cut the game to one point, 48-47 before a layup by the Tritons Drushaun McLaurn pushed them in front, 49-48. After regaining the lead with 16:10 to play, the Tritons led until a Tyreece Brice three-pointer tied the game at 58-58 with 12:11 to play. Dewberry and Trail Pierce made back-to-back layups to stay in front 62-60 with 10:36 before Eckerd took the lead for the last 10 minutes of the contest. Saint Leo would get within two, 71-69, and again 73-71 before the Tritons pushed it out to a 10 point game, 84-74, with 40-ticks left in the contest. Brice would hit a three-pointer with three seconds to play but it was too little too late for the Green and Gold as Eckerd led by five, 87-82, before a free throw to end the game by the Tritons. Dewberry added 13 points on 4-of-9 from the field. Brice tried to hang with Dewberry as he scored 10 in the second half as well. | Eckerd 88-82 |
