Dewberry’s 29 not enough as men’s basketball falls to Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's basketball team fell to Tampa, 79-67, in Sunshine State Conference play inside the Bob Martinez Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Lions fall to 7-8 overall and a 2-4 mark in the SSC.

"It's tough to go on the road and win in this conference," Head Coach Vince Alexander mentioned following the loss. "It's not impossible, but definitely tough when you're not executing and paying attention to the details. We will regroup and focus on our next game. Our guys will be working hard over the next few days to prepare for Lynn."

The Lions were led by Marcus Dewberry who scored game-high 29 points on 13-for-24 shooting from the field. Dewberry led the eight scorers for the Lions, where Tyreece Brice came off the bench and scored 11 points for the Green and Gold.

How It Happened…

1H | The first half of play saw the Spartans control the game for 14:47 minutes where they would use the three-point area to propel themselves in front of the Lions before the break. Tampa would finish the half on 50-percent shooting from beyond the three-point arc compared to Saint Leo's 28.6-percent (2-7). Tampa jumped out to a four-point lead after back-to-back trips down the court. Saint Leo would eventually work their way back into the game trailing by no more than three before a Tyreece Brice free throw to tie the game at eight's. The Lions would take the lead, 15-14, on a Justin Satchell three-pointer before the two teams exchanged the lead for the next two minutes. Saint Leo used a fast tempo to run out to their largest lead of the half, five points 24-19, with 7:41 remaining in the half. Tampa would storm back and use the Lions' empty possessions to take the lead, while Saint Leo had trouble scoring with two large scoring droughts under five minutes to play. The Lions last field goal was at the 2:36 mark by Marcus Dewberry before the Spartans took a 10 point lead into the break. Dewberry had a half-high of 15 points to lead the Lions, where three other Lions' joined him in the scoring column in the half in Tyreece Brice with seven points, Justin Satchell with six points and Gary Hector with two points. While on defense, the Saint Leo big men are attacking the ball and have recorded three blocks in the first half. 2H | The Lions came out of the half on fire and after the Spartans scored the first two points of the half Saint Leo came roaring back. Dewberry hit back-to-back three-pointers with a Brice layup to bring the score to 42-38. UT's Marcel Robinson followed the Lions run with a three of his own to push the lead back to seven points, 45-38, and neither team could score before the under-16 media timeout at 15:53. Searcy's fast break layup cut the deficit to five points, 49-44, before a Robinson three-pointer on the Spartans next possession moved it back to an eight-point contest at 52-44 with 12:32 to play. Over the next four minutes, Tampa used an 11-5 run to jump out in front by 14, 63-49, at the 8:29 mark. The Spartans would hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game as the closest the Lions would get was 12 points at 1:57, 77-65, and again 12 points at 0:48, 79-67. Dewberry scored the final field goal for the Lions at the 1:57 mark with a jumper before Gurkan tallied the final points with two free throws with 48-ticks left.   • The Spartans improve to 12-3, 5-1 SSC after the 79-67 victory.
  • Tampa was led by Marcel Robinson who scored 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting from downtown. Duke Shelton recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Two other Spartans were in double-figures in Austin Rettig with 14 points and Alberto Moreno with 13 points.
  • As a team, the Spartans shot 52.6-percent (30-57) from the field and 55.6-percent (10-18) from three-point territory. Tampa's bench out-produced the Lions by two points, 26-24, as the Spartans turned 12 Saint Leo turnovers into 15 points.
