Dewberry claims first SSC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo senior Marcus Dewberry was named the Sunshine State Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 13. Dewberry opened the season with back-to-back 30-plus point performances for the Lions.

Dewberry joined an elite club after the first two games of the season as he became just the 23rd player in the Green and Gold to surpass 1,000 career points. The Lake Wales native entered the season with 968 points before adding 65 points to his total after two games.

Dewberry led the charge in both of the Lions opening contest as he dropped 30 points on the opening night against No. 5 Ala.-Huntsville on Nov. 12 in Florence, Ala. Dewberry added four rebounds and three assists while picking up two steals in the 82-80 setback. In the second contest of the weekend, Dewberry scored 35 points and tallied eight rebounds, five assists and one steal against Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Challenge host, North Alabama.

For the weekend Dewberry scored 65 points, snagged 12 rebounds, and added eight assists with three steals. The senior was almost perfect from the free throw line going 11-for-12 from the charity stripe where his miss at the 5:31 mark of the second half was the first missed free throw dating back to Feb. 20, 2016, going 26-for-26 from the line before that.

Dewberry and the Saint Leo men's basketball team will be back in action Wednesday, Nov. 16 when they open Sunshine State Conference play at Florida Southern at 7:30 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla.
