Lions picked second in SSC Men’s Basketball preseason poll

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Saint Leo University men's basketball was selected to finish second in the Sunshine State Conference preseason coaches' poll, announced by the league's office on Thursday, Oct. 27.

"It's nice to see the conference coaches picked us to finish second, but we don't focus on a preseason poll," head coach Vince Alexander mentioned after seeing the coaches' poll come out on Thursday. "It's not where we are now, it's where we want to be in March that matters."

The Lions finished two votes behind the SSC preseason favorite Barry University and picked up two first-place votes in the poll. The Buccaneers tallied 57 total votes with a total of three first place votes.

Eckerd was picked third in the league with 48 votes and one first place vote, holding a two-vote edge over Rollins, who was picked fourth with 46 votes and two first place votes. The Tars were followed by Lynn in fifth (34 votes, one first place vote), Tampa in sixth (30 votes), Florida Southern in seventh (21 votes), Nova Southeastern in eighth (18 votes) and Florida Tech in ninth (15 votes).

A year ago, the Lions went 19-12 overall and held a 10-6 mark in the SSC, while making a trip to the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. Saint Leo was joined by Barry (26-7, 12-4 SSC), Eckerd (25-7, 12-4 SSC) and Rollins (21-9, 12-4 SSC) at the NCAA DII tournament in Alabama-Huntsville.
