Men’s Basketball honored by NABC

NABC Team Academic Excellence Award 

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team, along with three of its individual student-athletes were honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on July 26-27 for their academic success in 2015-16. Trail Pierce, Necdet Gurkan and Elijah Blackman earned recognition on the NABC Honors Court, as the team earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. 

Pierce, Gurkan and Blackman were three of 20 student-athletes in the Sunshine State Conference to be named to the Honors Court list, where all three have maintained a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average.

Pierce leads the way with a 3.81, Gurkan is next with a 3.37 as Blackman has a 3.34 GPA. Pierce and Gurkan were joined by Carter Belling and Johnathan Childs on the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll this spring.

The team was honored by the NABC with the Team Academic Excellence Award as the team finished with a team cumulative GPA of 3.13.

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2015-16 academic year.
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
4. Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.

In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA Division I and II, must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes who competed during the 2015-16 season. The NABC Team Academic Excellence Award is awarded to those institutions with cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or better for the 2015-16 season.
