Dewberry drops triple-double en route to Lions win

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Marcus Dewberry did something on Saturday night that he has never done in his career. The junior guard put together an impressive all-around performance to record his first ever triple-double. The quick-footed guard finished the game with a game-high 27 points, snagging a game-high 10 rebounds, and dishing out a game-high 10 assists, to help lead the Saint Leo men's basketball team to a 96-84 win over Sunshine State Conference foe Florida Tech.

The Lions saw three player score 20-plus points as Tyreece Brice followed Dewberry with 24 points, adding five rebounds, and four assists, and his first two dunks of the season. Caleb Stewart added 20 points on six of 10 shooting from three.

How It Happened 
1H | Saint Leo hit their first three shots of the game, all three three-point attempts, but were then held to an 0-6 run while the Panthers went 6-6, for 70-percent through the first seven minutes. The Lions used an 8-2 run with two three-point baskets from Carter Belling to close t­he gap back to 18-17. The two teams when back and forth until five straight Belling points gave the Lions a lead, 27-23. Marcus Dewberry used his speed and continued to blow by the Panthers, adding 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in the first half alone. An empathetic dunk from Tyreece Brice put an exclamation point on the period. | SLU 45-39 |

2H |  The second half opened the same way the first ended, with a dunk from Brice, getting the fans back into the game. Dewberry followed up an impressive first half with an opening to the second half that included the assist to Brice's dunk, and follow-up back-to-back threes.  Florida Tech used hustle and scrappy defense to get back into the game, with 10:50 left to play, the score stood at 65-64, Saint Leo. Just seconds later, the Lions saw their lead evaporate at the Panthers took their first lead of the second half, 66-65. However, the Lions were able to use four three-point shots to get back in charge of the game. Saint Leo dominated from there on, and sealed the game. | SLU

Points to Note

  • Prior to tonight's game, Belling was 3 of 18 from three in the month of February. Tonight, Belling finished with 17 points, hitting five threes. The freshman added three boards and two assists.
  • As a team, the Lions shot an impressive 58.1-percent from the field, while hitting a tied-season high 17 three-point field goals
  • Marcus Dewberry now has 12 20-plus point games this season as he finished with 27 points en route to a triple double, finishing with 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Dewberry shot 58.8-percent in the game.
  • Tyreece Brice finished with 24 points on 10 of 12 shooting, while Caleb Stewart finished with 20 by hitting six of 10 from three.


For the Panthers

  • Four Panther scored in double figures as Jermohn Queen finished with 20, while Corbin Jackson followed with 18 and six rebounds. Isaac Spence added 13 off the bench and Patrick Anderson added 11.
  • The Panthers dished out 14 assists, while only committed nine turnovers. At the same time, FIT forced 17 from the Lions
