Dewberry and Stewart Lift Lions to Victory at Florida Southern, 89-86

LAKELAND, Fla. – Career nights from both Marcus Dewberry and Caleb Stewart help lead the Saint Leo's men's basketball team over the defending national champions Florida Southern on Saturday night 89-86.

Marcus Dewberry finished with a career high 35 points on 13-of-23 shooting from the field and 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. Dewberry helped surge the team in the second half to overcome the Mocs lead and eventually go on for the win.

Caleb Stewart recorded his first career double-digit rebounding night going into his first career double-double finishing the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Stewart was 3-of-5 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. All 12 of his rebounds came from the defensive efforts.

How It Happened…

1H | The first half started off slow for both teams before the Mocs started to gain a bit of control. Saint Leo would keep it close within the first six minutes before Florida Southern would get out to a five point lead with 6:51 to play, 24-19. The Lions would get within one, 24-21, on a Marcus Dewberry layup and Lawrence Watt jumper with 5:34 to go. The Mocs would then go on a 10-2 run to get out to their largest lead of the half, 34-25. Saint Leo shut down the momentum for Florida Southern as they would end the half on a 11-4 run to go into the locker room down 38-36. Leading the way for the Lions was Marcus Dewberry who scored 10 points while Caleb Stewart ended the half with nine rebounds.| Florida Southern 38-36 |

2H | The Mocs came out of the locker room and extended their lead to six points before the Lions answered and got back within two points, 44-42. The game went back and forth before Saint Leo tied it up at 57 points with 11:56 to play in the game. After the Lions gained their first lead of the half, 59-58, it turned into the Dewberry show as he started lighting it up going off for 25 points in the second half alone. Saint Leo would lead by as many as five late in the game, before going on for the 89-86 victory over the defending national champions, Florida Southern. Dewberry finished with a career-high 35 points as Caleb Stewart recorded his first career double-double finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Points to Note

  • Marcus Dewberry scored a career high 35 points. Previous high was 34 points at Florida Tech on January 6th. He now has recorded 20 double-digit games this season with 10 20-point games and four 30-point games.
  • Caleb Stewart scored 14 points and cleaned up the glass with game-high 12 rebounds. This marks his first career double-double and it is the first time he has got over the double-digit mark in rebounding. This is his 16th game in double-figures.
  • Tyreece Brice has scored double-digits in 16 games this season as he finished with 12 points tonight.
  • As a team, the Lions cleaned up their shooting going 50-percent in the second half for a game percentage of 46.8. As the conference leaders in three point field goal percentage, Saint Leo shot 34.8-percent tonight. The Lions held Florida Southern to 32.3-percent, below their season average of 37.2-percent.
  • The Lions held the advantage in rebounding 43-34. Saint Leo only missed one free throw on the night going 23-for-24 from the line.
  • As the leagues leader in three point defense, Saint Leo held their opposition below their season average by 4.9-percent.

For the Mocs

  • Florida Southern had three players score in double-figures led by Dominique Williams who score 20 points.
  • Dylan Travis followed with 19 and Michael Volovic had 16.
  • The Mocs attempted 23 free throws connecting on 20 of them. They outscored the Lions on points off of turnovers 20-13.
