Three Lions Pace Saint Leo Over #10/11 Eckerd, 87-84

SAINT LEO, Fla. – On Florida Hospital Appreciation Night inside  the Bowman Center, the Saint Leo men's basketball team defeated No. 10/11 Eckerd 87-84 on Wednesday evening.

Saint Leo handed the Tritons their first loss of the season in the Sunshine State Conference, in a thrilling game. Both teams would see three players score in double-figures as the Lions had Marcus DewberryCaleb Stewart and coming off the bench, Tyreece Brice.

Dewberry and Stewart led the way for the Lions with 22 points apiece, as Brice scored 21. Stewart led all rebounders with eight rebounds, while Dewberry dished out five assists.

The Lions largest lead of the game was 12 points, late in the second half, as the Tritons largest lead was five points, in the first half of the game.

How It Happened 
1H | After the Lions scored the first two points of the game, Eckerd would build their largest lead of the half of five points at 16:53 in the opening half. Saint Leo would cut the lead with a Marcus Dewberry jumper and-1 opportunity to bring the game to 9-7, Tritons. The game would bounce back and forth before Eckerd led 23-21 at 4:50 to play. Saint Leo would tie the game and then go on a 9-0 run to build their largest lead of the half, ahead 36-27. The Lions would go into the locker room with a six point lead following three's from Carter Belling and Eckerd's Marco Behori. Tyreece Brice led all scorers in the first half with 11 points.  | Saint Leo 36-30 |

 

2H | Saint Leo would come out of the locker room and maintain their lead for a majority of the half, before the Tritons would climb back into the game, tying it at 49 with 11:27 to play. The Lions would see their largest lead of the game, 12 points 73-61 with 5:17 to play, as they were able to hold off the Tritons on their home court in the final minutes of the game. Saint Leo would would go on and win 87-84. Dewberry and Celeb Stewart would lead the Lions with 22 points as Brice was just behind with 21 points. Points to Note

  • Marcus Dewberry and Caleb Stewart each scored 22 points, as Tyreece Brice had 21 points on the night.
  • Saint Leo shot 53.2% (25-47) from the field, 40.9 % (9-22) from beyond the arc and 70% (28-40) from the free throw line.
  • As a team, the Lions scored 31 points off the bench.
  • The Lions improve to 11-2 in front of their home crowd on the season.

For the Tritons  

  • Drushaun McLaurn led all scorers on the night with 24 points, and was tied on the team with seven rebounds.
  • Joining McLaurn in double-figures were Obi Kyei with 19 and Jerrick Stevenson with 12.
  • The Tritons held the slight advantage on the boards 39-34.
  • Eckerd shot 44.6% (29-65) from the field, 18.8% (3-16) from beyond the arc and 63.9% (23-36) from the free throw line.
