Lions held up at Tampa, fall 86-71

TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team was halted on the road on Saturday afternoon, ending their four-game winning streak. The Lions fell at the hands of the University of Tampa, 86-71. The Lions are now just 1-4 in true road games.

While Caleb Stewart led the way for the Lions with 21 points, the Spartans countered with two 20-point performances of their own. Saint Leo connected on just 38-percent from the field, but used a 20 of 23 performance from the line to help keep the game close.

How It Happened…

1H | Tyreece Brice came off the bench just minutes into the game, and he gave the Lions the spark they needed, as the point guard connected on his first five baskets, including seven straight points over the span of a minute. However, the Lions were held without a bucket over the final four minutes of the period, scoring six points off of free throws. Tampa used free throw to their advantage as Duke Shelton hit seven of eight attempts, and led the Spartans with 15 points. The Lions held the lead until the five minute mark when the two teams when back and forth, with Tampa taking the final lead at the half. | UT 41-40 |

2H | A slow start by the Lions to the second half was halted when Marcus Dewberry hit a three at the 15:51 mark. Tampa inflated their lead to 13 points before Saint Leo went on a nine-point run to cut the lead to just four. A Shelton lay-up for the Spartans halted the Lions run, and Tampa responded with seven of their own, and 13-2 run, inflating the lead to 17 points before the final basket of the game from Brice wrapped up the game. | UT 86-71 |

Points to Note

  • Four Lions scored in the double-figures, led by Caleb Stewart who had 21 points. Brice finished with 18 on seven of 12 shooting. Dewberry followed with 16 points and six rebounds, while Trey Grisek added with 10 points and six boards.
  • This was Stewart's sixth 20-plus point performance of the season. 

For the Spartans

  • The Spartans were led by Pat Bacon who finished with 29 points, but he was followed closely by sophomore Duke Shelton who added 27. Shelton finished with the games lone double-double adding 12 rebounds.
  • Tampa dominated the paint, outscoring the Lions 40-16 inside. The Spartants also shot an impressive 52-percent from the field.
