Men’s basketball cruises past Allen, 102-68

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's basketball nearly matched visiting Allen University's entire scoring output in the second half alone, netting 62 points over the final 20 minutes on its way to a 102-68 thumping of the Yellow Jackets, Tuesday night at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.

How It Happened 

1H | Saint Leo opened up with six straight points and held its lead the rest of the way. The closest Allen came to overtaking the Lions was just under three minutes into the game, when a three-pointer by Emaray Johnson followed by a Sean Smith layup pulled the Yellow Jackets to within one, 6-5. Caleb Stewart answered with trey at the 16:57 mark, and the Lions began to pull away from there. Allen briefly cut the margin to four points, 20-16 with 8:47 to play, but a Dewberry three-pointer and fastbreak layup off a turnover quickly had Saint Leo back up by nine, 25-16. The Lions' lead cracked double-digits at 28-18 with 6:04 showing on the clock, and Saint Leo outscored Allen, 12-6, over the final five minutes of the frame to take a 12-point lead into the locker room at the intermission. | Saint Leo 40-Allen 28 |

2H |The pace turned frenetic in the second half, sparked by Saint Leo's 11-0 run to open the half. The Lions managed to outscore the Yellow Jackets, 23-2, over the first six-and-a-half minutes of the second half, effectively putting the game out of reach at 63-30 with 13:52 showing. Eli Blackman recorded his first points of the season on a layup with 1:07 left in the game, and D'Shea Williams had a layup and a pair of free throws for his first points of the year.  | Saint Leo 102 - Allen 68 |

Points to Note

  • Five Lions scored in double-digits, led by Austin Pickett's 18 points off the bench on four three-pointers. Marcus Dewberry paced the starters with 17 points, largely coming off three three-pointers and a perfect 6-of-6 mark at the free-throw line. Trail Pierce logged a season-high 12 points, while Tyreece Brice finished with 11. Ryan Burnett capped the double-figure scorers with 10 points. Dewberry and Brice had seven and six assists respectively.
  • The Lions shot 47.8 percent (33-of-69) from the floor, and matched their season high with 12 three-pointers. The 22 assists charted by the Green and Gold against Allen is also a season-best effort, along with 16 steals.
  • Saint Leo matched Allen on the boards with 40 rebounds each – the first time this season the Lions have not been outrebounded. 
  • A total of 50 fouls were called in the game, sending the two teams to the line for a total of 76 free throws.

For the Yellow Jackets

  • Sean Smith led Allen offensively with 12 points on a 5-of-6 effort from the field, while DJ Marshall tallied 10 points. The Yellow Jackets were forced into committing 29 turnovers.
  • The Yellow Jackets were held to just 39.6 (21-of-53) shooting from the floor.
