Lions down Sharks in SSC battle

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team took down Nova Southeastern on Saturday evening, earning a 93-88 Sunshine State Conference win in exciting fashion as both teams pushed the ball and kept the game close through the whole game.

The Basics:

How It Happened 

1H | A back-and-forth first half opened with Saint Leo running out to a fast start, but Nova Southeastern fought back. A tied game at 10-10  at the five minute mark foreshadowed how the outcome of the half would be, but first the Lions lit a small fire. The Lions pulled away from a close game by going on an 11-0 run. Freshman Lawrence Watt led the offense, dropping nine points in just 10 minutes of play, including five of the 11 unanswered points. The Sharks' Chris Page responded with a solid 15 points and gave Nova the attacking look needed to keep the game within one or two points for the last three minutes of the first. | SLU 44- NSU 43 |

2H |A tight score to start the second half held both team to making their baskets as neither team lead more than two or three points for the first five minutes. A dunk from froward Caleb Stewart separated the Lions lead to 56-51. Nova used their talent outside the arch to drop two consecutive three-pointers to keep cut the lead by one, 58-57. With 12:42 left to play, Nova's Harrison Goodrick swished a free throw and tied it up at 60 which started Nova's lead on the game that lasted until 9:25 remaining. The attack was put forth mostly by Nova's Nick Pendergast with six points. Both teams took the lead from one another all game, the score set back at a tie, 72-72. Saint Leo came back from behind to continue to keep the gap.  Stewart showed his versatility by separating the green and gold with a layup, a jumper and a three-pointer to start off this lead that the Lions will not lose for the rest of the game. An exciting finish to the game as the two conference opponents both score back-to-back for the last minute of regulation play. The Lions had the last word as Belling netted the last two points off of successful free throws to notch the win. | SLU 93- NSU 88 |

Points to Note

  • Caleb Stewart went 9 for 16 scoring 26 points, collecting eight rebounds off the glass
  • Four Lions tabbed double digits in points, including Stewart, Ryan Burnett (13), Lawrence Watt (13), and Dewberry(11).
  • Shot 44.3% from the field, connecting on 31 of 70 attempts. 

For the Sharks

  • Chris Page led the way with 24 points and five steal. Nick Pendergast followed with 19 points, while Harrison Goodrick recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. BJ Edwards followed with 10 points.
  • The Sharks hit 10 three-point field goals in the game.
