Lions pitted against Barry in SSC Championship quarters


SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team will battle No. 9-ranked Barry University in its opening game of the 2015 Sunshine State Conference Men's Basketball Championship, which starts play on Friday, March 6.

The seventh-seeded Lions are pitted against the second-seeded Buccaneers in Friday's third quarterfinal which will tip off at 5:00 p.m. at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Fla.

Saint Leo (14-14) finished tied for fifth in the SSC standings with Nova Southeastern (11-15) and Florida Tech (16-12), all with a 6-10 conference record. The Lions were seeded seventh through a series of tiebreakers that saw the Panthers take the fifth seed and the Sharks slotted sixth.

Barry (22-4) earned the number 2 seed by virtue of its 13-3 SSC record. The Buccaneers posted a pair of wins over Saint Leo in the regular season – a 64-56 loss to the 12th-ranked Bucs on December 6 at the Bowman Center, and a 78-58 setback to a Barry team ranked fourth in the nation on January 31 in Miami Shores.

The winner of the Saint Leo-Barry quarterfinal game will advance to Saturday's 7:30 p.m. semifinal game against the victor of the Tampa (18-9, 10-6 SSC) vs. Nova Southeastern quarterfinal. The championship game will take place on Sunday, March 8, at 4:00 p.m., and will be televised on ESPN3.

Single session tickets for the 2015 SSC Men's Basketball Championship are $10 per person. Admission is free for all Saint Leo students with a valid I.D., as well as children under six years of age.
