Girten fuels the Saint Leo comeback win over Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Behind the unstoppable performance from senior Cale Girten, the Saint Leo men's basketball team pulled off a comeback win, defeating Eckerd College by a 67-63 final score, Wednesday evening.

The Lions leave the McArthur Center with a 13-14 record, 5-10 in Sunshine State Conference play while the hosting Tritons conclude the contest 11-15 and 4-12 in conference matchups.

Girten shot a blistering 80%, including a 100% (7-for-7) from beyond the arc.  The forward totaled 24 points and muscled out six boards to lead the Lions to a crucial conference victory.  Guards Trey Griseck and Marcus Dewberry added 10 and nine points, respectively to round out the Green and Gold attack.

As a team, the Lions were perfect at the free-throw line, shooting 18-for-18 while draining 62% (13-21) from three-point territory.  Eckerd nearly matched the Saint Leo effort, totaling 12 three-pointers, but the difference came at the charity stripe as the Tritons were 13-for-20 (65%) compared to the Lions even 100%.

Both teams battled in the opening stanza, as the Tritons took an early lead in the opening minutes. Senior Girten closed the gap, nailing a pristine 4-for-4 in three-pointers to open the game, totaling 14 points as the forward notched a late dunk to pull Saint Leo within three points of the Tritons.  Eckerd ended the first frame with a 30-27 lead as the Triton offense spread its attack.  Fellow senior Ron Foxx added five points and three boards to complement Girten's half.

The battle beyond the arc continued as each team traded three-point salvos to try and gain the advantage.  Girten was perfect in his seven shots from downtown, scoring X total through the contest.  Guard Griseck aided with a pair of three-pointers to his credit as the Lions came back to take the lead 54-53 with 3:30 left in the second half.

Sophomore Dewberry added nine second-half points to, converting all six of his trips to the charity stripe while Griseck added five made free-throws to close out the comeback win.
