Childs' career night not enough against Tampa

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The Saint Leo men's basketball team dropped a 65-57 decision to Tampa Wednesday night at the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The Lions were led by Ron Foxx with 18 points, but freshman Johnathan Childs had a career night with 12 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Fox finished with a team high 18 points and a perfect 10-for-10 night from the charity stripe. The Florida native pulled in five rebounds and turned in one steal. Childs had his first double-digit performance of his collegiate career, and went 6-for-7 from the floor in 22 minutes of action.

Marcus Dewberry added eight points, six rebounds and two assists while Cale Girten chipped in six points and three rebounds.

The first half proved to be a tight contest between the I-75 rivals, but Saint Leo took a 33-32 advantage into the break. In the first half, both teams shot 47.8% from the field, but Saint Leo went 8-for-10 from the free throw line.

A second half surge by the Spartans put Saint Leo behind and the Lions trailed by as many as 12 in the second half. The Green and Gold strung together a 14-5 closing run and cut the Spartans lead to just three points with two minutes to play.

In the final minutes of action, the Lions went cold and were only able to convert two free-throws. Tampa shot over 40 percent from the floor in the second half, while Saint Leo turned in a 29.2 shooting percentage and a 0-for-11 performance from behind the arc.

Saint Leo returns to action at Eckerd Wednesday Feb. 25th at 7:30 pm. The Lions have two games remaining before the Sunshine State Conference tournament.
