ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team came from behind to defeat the Eckerd College Tritons, Wednesday night, in the Lions' last road trip of the regular season. The 60-57 victory was led by double-digit scoring efforts from seniors Jerrel Harris and Chim Kadima.
The win improved the Lions' record to 21-7 on the season and 9-6 in conference play. In addition, the triumph marked the most regular season wins for a men's basketball program in Saint Leo history.
The first basket of the game was credited to the Lions' Cale Girten, as Saint Leo took the lead in the first minute of play. Despite the early lead, the Tritons fought back, forcing a lead change with thirteen minutes to play in the first period. Although both teams fought hard, Eckerd would walk into halftime with a 34-26 score in their favor.
After the whistle sounded for the second period to begin, a physical battle ensued, but Eckerd would maintain a lead until Jerrel Harris sank a jumper with just under four minutes to play to tie the game. Seconds later, a pair of Eckerd free throws gave the Tritons back the lead, but a clutch three-pointer from Girten forced Saint Leo to go ahead and never look back. After trailing for the majority of the contest, the Lions left the McArthur Center with a 60-57 victory.
As a team, Saint Leo shot 22-51 (43 percent) from the field in the effort, earning 10 of 25 three pointers for a 40 percent three-point throw average. The squad shot 6-11 (55 percent) from behind the charity stripe.
In addition to 14 assists and five steals, the Lions capitalized on defense, registering 27 rebounds and forcing 12 Eckerd turnovers.
Individually, senior Jerrel Harris led all players in scoring on the night, recording 20 points. Senior Chim Kadima followed his lead with 14. Kadima and junior Ron Foxx also tallied six rebounds apiece to lead the team.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 1 when they host the visiting Nova Southeastern Sharks on Senior Day. Tipoff is slated for 4:00 p.m., following the senior day ceremony.
