Buzzer-Beater Falls in Favor of Lynn; Lions Fall 63-60

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In a grueling Saturday afternoon matchup against Lynn University, the Saint Leo men's basketball team fell to the visiting Fighting Knights by a 63-60 score. Senior Jerrel Harris scored 21 points in the effort, but it was no match for Lynn's buzzer-beater finish.

When the whistle signaled to start play in the first half, Lynn won the tip-off and scored first, but Saint Leo soon rebounded. Both teams fought hard in the period, forcing a total of seven lead changes and seven times where the score was tied. Saint Leo went into halftime with a 32-29 lead.

After halftime, the same physical battle of the first half ensued. The teams battled at both ends of the court, but it was a decision that would be decided in the final seconds of play.

With just eight seconds on the clock and the Lions down 60-57, senior Jerrel Harris took control of the ball and launched a long three-pointer through the net, tying the game at 60-60. Four seconds remained.

After a Saint Leo timeout left just 2.8 seconds on the clock, the Fighting Knights were awarded possession and it was sophomore guard Fred Landers who sank a long three to beat the buzzer and send Lynn home with their second Sunshine State Conference victory of the year.

Despite shooting 10-18 (56 percent) from the field in the second half, and 20-46 (44 percent) for the game, the clock did not fall in the Lions' favor.

As a team, Saint Leo pulled down 30 rebounds in the effort, tallying four steals and forcing 10 Lynn turnovers. The squad also combined for nine assists.

Senior Chim Kadima was the only player in the game to earn a double double, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Offensively, senior Jerrel Harris scored 21 points in the effort to lead his Lions team. Harris and Kadima were the only members of the green and gold to score in double-digits.

On the defensive side of the ball, junior Ron Foxx also contributed heavily, notching eight rebounds.

The Lions will return to action on Wednesday evening when they visit Eckerd College to take on the Tritons in the second-to-last game of the regular season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
