SAINT LEO, Fla. – After a tough physical battle that pitted the Lions against the number two scoring offense in the Sunshine State Conference, the Saint Leo men's basketball team defeated the visiting Barry University Buccaneers by a 78-58 score. The Saturday afternoon contest featured a career-high 21 points by junior Ron Foxx.
It was the Barry Buccaneers who picked up the first points in the contest, when Savad Garner sank a jumper. Soon after, however, the Lions battled back. With both teams exchanging leads throughout the first fifteen minutes of play, the Lions were able to gain some momentum at the five-minute mark and force a 32-23 lead heading into halftime.
After the halftime period expired, both teams came out fighting for victory. Despite the Bucs' offensive push, the Lions were able to maintain the lead throughout the rest of the contest, earning a 78-58 win over the number two team in the Sunshine State Conference.
Though Barry leads the conference in the rebounding margin and rebounding defense categories, the Barry Bucs were out-rebounded by the Saint Leo Lions 38 to 34. Individually, senior Jerrel Harris and junior Ron Foxx led the Lions in rebounds with seven apiece.
It was junior Ron Foxx who led the Lions offensively in the win, recording 21 points to earn a new career-high. The effort pushed him over 200 points this season.
In addition, sophomore Trey Griseck and junior Ryan Wilson also scored in double digits, tallying 11 points each. Jerrel Harris, who previously earned a career-high against Barry this season, contributed with ten points.
As a team, the Lions shot 24-55 (44 percent) from the field in the victory. In addition, the squad sank 22 of 26 free throws and tallied 19 assists.
The Lions forced 20 Barry turnovers and held the Bucs to just 37 percent from the field.
The Saint Leo men's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, February 12 when they host the visiting Tampa Spartans in yet another Sunshine State Conference contest. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Marion Bowman Center on the campus of Saint Leo University. The halftime period of the contest will feature a very special celebration.
