SAINT LEO, Fla. - Former Saint Leo University standout Marcus Ruh signed a professional contract to play in Australia for the Ringwood Hawks. Ringwood plays in the Australian Big Victoria State League and is located in a suburb of Melbourne. The Hawks, one of the most storied programs in Australian State League history, finished runner-up in the Big V championship in 2013 and won the Championship last in 2012.
"I couldn't be more excited to sign with the Ringwood Hawks," Ruh said. "Playing professionally has always been a dream of mine, and I am getting an opportunity to pursue that dream. Australia was always my top choice, and fortunately it worked out in my favor. The whole process was pretty stressful and pretty much a waiting game. It is kind of an unknown process of when and who you will hear from about playing. Coach (Lance) Randall and Coach (JR) Blount were very helpful during this. JR was able to help me from a player's perspective and Coach Randall helped from a coach's/management perspective."
Ruh, during his two seasons at Saint Leo, led the Lions to two NCAA berths culminating in the school's first ever Sunshine State Conference Championship in 2013. One of the most decorated student-athletes in Saint Leo history, Ruh was a two-time all SSC league performer and was voted SSC player of the year his senior season. In addition he was named Third Team All-America and First Team All South Region. A 4.0 student, Ruh received numerous academic awards during his time at Saint Leo, including the Daktronics Academic All-America of the Year and NCAA Division II Commissioner's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for all sports.
"I am very proud of and happy for Marcus to have realized his dream of playing professional basketball," Randall said. "He has been a catalyst for many great things within our basketball program and all of Saint Leo. He is an amazing person and an excellent basketball player. Marcus is a person who will achieve greatness in whatever endeavor he chooses to follow. I know that the Hawks are getting a special player. I am very much looking forward to following his career."
Ruh's season will be begin this February and he can be followed through the Hawk's website at http://www.ringwoodhawks.com.au/
"I am so thankful to Coach Randall and Saint Leo for giving me the opportunity to play for the Lions. My two years at Saint Leo were great, and without this chance, my dreams of playing professionally may never have worked out."
