Lions Drop Barry to Claim First Back-to-Back SSC Winning Seasons in Program History
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team used another second-half surge en route to a dominating 65-52 defeat of visiting Barry University in Sunshine State Conference men's basketball action from the Bowman Center on Saturday afternoon.
The game, played as the Lions' Senior Day celebration as it's the final weekend game of the regular season, was knotted at halftime, but the second half belonged to Saint Leo (17-4, 9-2 SSC). The Lions' aggressive approach on offense forced Barry (9-11, 3-8 SSC) into foul trouble early and the Lions cashed in, draining 15 free throws in the half compared to Barry's 2-for-4 half from the charity stripe. While both teams shot roughly the same from the field in the half, the 15-for-20 effort from the free throw stripe help grow the margin to another Saint Leo victory.
The win gave the Lions' their ninth SSC triumph of the season and cemented the first back-to-back conference winning seasons in program history.
For Barry, Magne Fivelstad scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Filip Toric posted a quiet 12 points in the loss.
The Lions, holding the no. 2 spot in the regular season standings, now turn their attention toward their toughest test this season. Saint Leo will travel to Lakeland, Fla. to face Florida Southern, the SSC's top team, in a prime time showdown on Wednesday night. Tip off between the Lions and Mocs is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Jenkins Field House at the Florida Southern campus.
