No. 21 Lions Drop Overtime Contest to Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – In a game with a number of confusing moments in the final minutes, the No. 21 Saint Leo men's basketball team dropped a 69-65 decision to the University of Tampa in Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday night from the Martinez Athletic Center.

A game which neither team controlled saw Saint Leo take the slimmest of leads in the last 90 seconds of the game.  Holding possession, the Lions (11-3, 3-1 SSC) fed the ball to a wide open Shaun Adams under the basket with 1:09 on the clock.  Going up for the lay-in, Adams looked to be fouled from behind but no whistle sounded and the ball bounced off his foot and rolled out of bounds.

The resulting two Tampa (13-3, 1-3 SSC) possessions saw the Spartans erase a 53-49 lead, including a layup with five seconds left to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session the Spartans dropped in some clutch shots and made most of their free throw attempts to earn the win.

Despite the loss, Trent Thomas led the Lions with 23 points including a clutch three-pointer with less than 30 seconds left in regulation to give Saint Leo a lead that seemed to solidify a win. Marcus Ruh was the only other player in double-figures for the Lions as he dropped in 19 points.

Tampa kept the ball moving and it showed in the final stats as four Spartans reached double-figures with Da'Markco Foster dropping in a team-leading 16 points.

The Lions will look to rebound from their first loss in nine games when they return to the Bowman Center on Saturday afternoon to face Florida Tech.  Tip-off against the Panthers is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
