SAINT LEO, Fla. – A scoreless seven minute start to their Sunshine State Conference game against the visiting Rollins College Tars saw the Saint Leo men’s basketball team unable to rebound in an 85-73 loss on Saturday afternoon.
A hurried team from the start, the Lions missed their first six shots while Rollins connected on five of their first eight shots to open up a 13-0 lead before two Matt Kendrick free throws got the Lions on the board. The start would give the visitors from Winter Park, Fla. a comfortable margin of around 10 points for the majority of the first half.
Bringing the gap to just five points before the half, Saint Leo (9-6, 1-5 SSC) would spark themselves and the crowd when Quentin Cullop heaved a half-court pass to Matt Kendrick who caught it midair and dunked it home. The play sent the teams into the break with Rollins (12-3, 4-1 SSC) holding a 40-34 advantage.
Despite the halftime heroics, the Tars opened up the second half by going on a 26-7 run in the first ten minutes to push the game first into Rollins’ control. The Tars would maintain the double-digit advantage throughout the remainder.
Saint Leo would see Jamal Thompson score 17 points as he hit five 3-pointers to lead the team. Scoring 12 points each, Matt Kendrick and Dominick Robinson were the only other Lions to register double-digits in the loss.
Quentin Cullop nearly tied his career high with 10 assists on the evening, one shy of his record set last season.
Despite the slow start, the Lions still shot 50 percent (28-for-56) for the game but they would still be outdone by the visitors, who posted a 56 percent (28-for-50) shooting average in the win.
The Tars would have two 20-point scorers with Nick Wolf dropping in 23 points and Myk Brown finishing with 22.
Saint Leo will now turn their attention to Eckerd College as the Tritons visit the Bowman Center on Wednesday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Bowman Center on the Saint Leo campus.
