Saint Leo, Fla. (February 2, 2008) – Sophomore guard Quentin Cullop (Winter Haven, Fla.) scored a career-high 23 points and Jordan Prais added a double-double with a team-high 24 points and game-high tying 11 rebounds to lead the Saint Leo University men’s basketball team (10-9) to a 92-78 non-conference win over Palm Beach Atlantic (3-19) on Saturday afternoon. The win was the third straight for SLU, and pushed the team’s overall record above .500 for the first time since January 12.
The Lions turned a five-point half-time lead into 14-point win, sweeping their two games with the Sailfish this season. Saint Leo was red hot from the field throughout, shooting 62.0% (31-of-50) from the field and 56.3% (9-of-16) from beyond the three-point line. The Lions also shot it well from the free throw line, going 21-of-27 (77.8%).
Palm Beach Atlantic guard Fitzroy Anthony scored a game-high 27 points in defeat for the Sailfish, while center Manny Lopez matched Prais with a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 boards.
PBA had three early leads, but the Lions took control of the game with an 11-2 run that helped open a 22-12 lead. The Sailfish closed to within three late in the half, but the Lions held a 43-38 lead at the half.
Saint Leo put the game out of reach early in the second half, using a 13-0 run to open up the largest lead of the game at 18 with 14:58 left in the contest. The Lions led by as many as 23 later in the half en route to the 14-point victory.
The Lions return to Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday night with a trip to Winter Park, Fla. to face Rollins College. Opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Warden Arena.
