Miami Shores, Fla. (January 26, 2008) – Sophomore forward Jordan Prais (Lakeland, Fla.) scored a game-high 22 points, lifting the Saint Leo University men’s basketball team (8-9, 2-5 SSC) to a 78-72 win over Barry University (6-13, 0-7 SSC) on Saturday afternoon in Miami Shores, Fla.
Prais scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half, helping the Lions to win their second conference game of the season. Junior guard Dusty Driggs (Sharpsville, Ind.) and sophomore Thomas Kaiser (Tampa, Fla.) joined Prais in double figures, as they scored 15 and 11 points, respectively. Driggs made five three-pointers in the contest, as the Lions made 11 three-pointers as a team.
Saint Leo used a 17-4 run early in the game to turn a four point deficit into a nine point lead with 10:33 remaining in the first half. Barry rallied back and led by one late in the half, courtesy of a 10-2 run. However, the Lions took a 36-35 lead into the locker room when Prais connected on a jumper with 36 seconds left in the half.
The Lions raced to their largest lead of the game early in the second half, putting together a 14-5 run in the opening 5:06 of the second stanza and leading by 10. Once again, Barry chipped away at the lead and tied the score twice before the Lions grabbed the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Brandon Powell (So., Tampa, Fla.). Saint Leo clinched the win at the free throw line, as Kaiser hit a pair of free throws to ice the game and give the Lions their second SSC win of the year.
Saint Leo shot 44.4% (24-of-54) for the game and 42.3% (11-of-26) from beyond the three-point arch. Barry shot 52.7% (29-of-55), but the Lions made 19 free throws compared to the Bucs’ six.
Saint Leo will return to the hardwood on Wednesday night when the Lions host Florida Tech in another Sunshine State Conference game. Opening tip is scheduled or 7:30 p.m. at the Bowman Center.
