Boca Raton, Fla. (March 2, 2007) – The 2006-07 Saint Leo University men’s basketball season came to an end Friday evening with a 76-45 loss to Eckerd College in the 2007 Sunshine State Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at Lynn University’s de Hoernle Center in Boca Raton, Fla.
Saint Leo’s season ended with a 13-15 record, while Eckerd improved to 23-5 and advanced to tomorrow’s second semifinal (7:30 p.m.) with the win.
The Lions were led by Saladeem Dewberry (Fr., Calypso, N.C.) and Kyle Rowland (So., North Port, Fla.) who each scored nine points. A trio of Eckerd players were in double figures, led by Matt Cenatus’ game-high 16 points.
Aside from two early ties, Eckerd led throughout the contest en route to their third win of the season over the Lions. The Tritons opened the game by scoring 13 of the first 18 points. Saint Leo closed to within one with 10:10 remaining in the first half, but it was Eckerd who led 28-23 at the half.
The Tritons took control out of the half-time locker room, going on a 12-2 run to open a 15-point lead. The Lions got to within nine points on a three-pointer by Jonathan Banks (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) with 10:30 left. However, the Tritons continued to pull away from that point and the final margin of 31 points marked the largest lead of the night.
