West Palm Beach, Fla. (December 16, 2006) – Freshman Saladeem Dewberry (Calypso, N.C.) matched a career high with 16 points and three Saint Leo players scored in double figures, leading the Lions to a 79-71 win over Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday in West Palm Beach, Fla.  The Lions improved to 4-5 with the win, while the Sailfish slipped to 2-10.

Dewberry also grabbed a career and game-high eight rebounds in the contest, while fellow freshmen Quentin Cullop (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Jordan Prais (Lakeland, Fla.) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.  PBA’s Sean Tucker scored a game-high 18 points in defeat for the Sailfish.

The game was tight early on with the lead changing hands four times before Saint Leo opened up a seven-point advantage with 11:20 remaining in the opening half.  The Lions eventually took a 31-26 lead into the locker room.

After PBA guard Jonathan Cernak opened the second half with a three-pointer to make it a two-point contest, Saint Leo went on a 13-0 run to take charge of the game.  The Lions stretched the lead to as many as 18 points.

However, the Sailfish continued to battle and chip away at the Lion lead and eventually pulled to within two points at 66-64 with 2:51 left to play.  A 7-0 run by SLU ended any hopes of a comeback, and solid free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the win for the visitors.

Saint Leo will return to the hardwood on Saturday, December 30 when the Lions host Flagler College at the Bowman Center.  Opening tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Bowman Center, and will immediately follow the women’s game versus Georgia Southwestern State University at 2:00 p.m.
