Scott belts seventh home run of the season in loss to Flagler

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Junior Zach Scott belted his seventh home run of the season and redshirt junior Chase Turner hit a two-run single in the first inning for the Lions as Saint Leo baseball dropped a 12-5 decision to Flagler College, Saturday afternoon at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.

Saint Leo fell to 21-25 with the loss, while Flagler improved to 28-22.

The Lions plated three runs in the first inning, two of those off Turner's base hit to left field, giving Saint Leo a 3-1 lead.

The Saints regained the lead in the top of the second on Sean Lawlor's three-run home run to left field, giving Flagler a 4-3 advantage. Flagler extended its lead to 5-3 in the third on Jason Moore's grounder to short, which allowed Igor Baez to cross.

Flagler manufactured three runs in the top of the fifth on four hits and a walk, with Moore's two-run double down the left field line doing most of the damage to put the Saints in front, 8-3.

The two teams traded runs in the seventh, before Flagler added some insurance runs with a three-run uprising in the ninth.

Scott got one of those runs back in the bottom of the ninth with a towering shot to right center with one away.

Scott, Lane Stancil, Dylan Harris, and Tate Sweatt each charted a pair of hits for the Lions, with Alex Mata stroking a double into center field to inch closer to Saint Leo's all-time hits record. The redshirt senior now has 267 career hits, and is three shy of setting a new Green and Gold record.

For the Saints, Baez and Ja'Kobi Dasher each charted three hits, while Moore finished with four runs batted in.

It was a staff day for both teams on the mound, with Saint Leo starter Jordan Pendleton getting the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits. Flagler starter Cooper Wallace allowed three runs on five hits, but was the pitcher of record when the Saints took the lead in the second and received credit for the win.

Saint Leo hosts Florida Southern in a three-game series next weekend to close out the 2017 season. Game one between the Lions and the Mocs will be Friday, May 12, starting at 6:00 p.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, May 13.
