Baseball drops SSC series opener at Barry, 4-0

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University posted one run in the first and three more in the third then held visiting Saint Leo to five hits, as the Lions dropped a 4-0 decision to the Buccaneers in a Sunshine State Conference matchup on Thursday at Feinbloom Field.

Saint Leo (18-18, 3-10 SSC) and Barry will conclude the series on Friday, April 14, with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.

Barry's lone run in the first came on Ryan Baldwin's two-out single to left field, scoring Justin Lamazares. The Buccaneers tacked on three more runs in the third on three hits and a pair of Saint Leo errors. Two runs crossed on Claudio Rubiera's sacrifice fly to center field, followed by a Lion error on the relay to allow a second run to cross. The final run scored on a wild pitch to the ensuing batter, Khalil Denson.

Alex Mata finished with a pair of hits, while Brett Coffel, Shane Williams, and Tate Sweatt had one each.

Saint Leo's best scoring opportunity came in the seventh inning, when Mike Mann got aboard on a dropped fly ball in left field, followed by Sweatt's one-out single into center field that advanced Mann to third. Zach Scott drew a walk to load up the bases with one out, but Derek Gibree hit into a 5-3 double play to end the Lion threat.

Lions starter Tyler Bauman went the distance in the loss, fanning six Buccaneer batters against just two walks.

Barry starter Jonathan Hernandez struck out four batters over his seven innings of work on his way to the win.
