SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University shortstop Derek Gibree was named the Sunshine State Conference Baseball Player of the Week on Monday, after a three-game weekend that saw the redshirt sophomore bat .545 for the Lions with a 1.091 slugging percentage.
Gibree went 6-for-11 over Saint Leo's season opening three-game series against the University of West Alabama, which ended with Saint Leo victories in two out of the three contests.
He went 2-for-4 in Friday's season opener that ended with an 11-5 win over the Tigers, including his first collegiate career home run – a solo shot to left field that was part of a four-run fourth inning for the Lions. In Sunday's rubber game to the three-game series, Gibree belted yet another home run – a two-run shot in the sixth – while again going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Gibree went 2-for-3 in Saturday's loss to West Alabama, drawing one HBP and crossing for one run.
Altogether, Gibree charted five runs, three RBI, two home runs, a stolen base, and two HBP over the three game series, with a .615 on-base percentage.
Saint Leo baseball is home again this weekend as it plays host to Lee University from the Gulf South Conference for three games at Southard Stadium. The series opens with a single game on Friday, Feb. 10, starting at 6:00 p.m., and continues with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1:00 p.m.
