WINCHESTER, Va. – Saint Leo baseball infielder Alex Mata has been named a Valley League Player of the Week Honorable Mention, it was announced Thursday. Mata currently plays for the Winchester Royals, and is competing in the competitive summer baseball league along with fellow teammate Nick Perez.
At this point in summer play, Mata currently leads his team in hitting, posting a .340 batting average in 12 games played. The right-handed hitter already has a homerun on the year, with a team-leading 16 hits and five walks in 47 at-bats.
During his freshman campaign with the Lions, Mata was a steady contributor in the lineup and from his infield position at second base. The rookie registered 35 hits for a .314 batting average, blasting 10 doubles, one triple, and one homerun. He finished the 2014 season with a .400 slugging average and .324 on-base percentage.
