WINTER PARK, Fla. – After a weekend in which the Lions' baseball squad picked up their first Sunshine State Conference victory of the season and a three-game SSC series sweep, sophomore Cole Stancil has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Baseball Player of the Week presented by VALIC. Nova Southeastern's Mitchel Buerosse joins Stancil as the SSC pitcher of the week.
A native of Ridge Manor, Fla., Stancil led the Lions to a 3-1 week, including a three-game SSC series sweep of Florida Tech at the Panthers' home field in Melbourne. Against the Panthers, Stancil went 6-of-12 (.500) at the plate. In Game two of the series, the sophomore went 3-of-5 with three doubles, including a game-winning RBI double in the top of the 10th inning. Stancil came in to score an insurance run in the 11-9 extra-inning win. The sophomore finished the week hitting .563 (9-of-16) and slugging .750.
The three-game sweep propelled Saint Leo to a 19-12 overall record just in time for a midweek trip to Rollins College for a regional contest. First pitch of that game is scheduled for Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
