SAINT LEO, Fla. –The Lions' offense exploded for 20 hits to top Saginaw Valley State 17-1 on Wednesday night from Jack Russell Stadium. Saint Leo moves to 12-6 on the year while Saginaw Valley State falls to 1-4.
Five different Lions' batters contributed multiple hits on the night—with Cole Stancil leading the pack with four hits and two runs scored. Vitale led the way in the RBI column—slugging in three runs on his three hits on the evening. Collecting three hits and three runs scored was Taylor Perez.
Brandon Mumaw made the first start of his career on the mound for the Lions and he did not disappoint. Mumaw did not allow a run in five innings of work, while giving up just two hits and striking out three.
The Lions continued their early game offensive output and scored two runs in the top of the first when Chris Newcomb brought home Bobby Twitty on an RBI single up the middle. A throwing error on the Saginaw Valley catcher allowed Michael Revell to come home to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
The Lions expanded their lead by putting up a four-spot in the fourth inning and they followed it right up with three more runs in the fifth. The Lions tallied seven hits combined between the two innings.
Just when it looked like the Lions were about to finish off the Cardinals, with a 10-1 lead going into the ninth, the Lions offense caught fire once again—this time for seven runs to completely seal the Lions' second win in as many nights. The inning was highlighted by junior Michael Callahan ripping two hits and tallying two RBI.
Relieving Mumaw in the sixth inning was Matthew Hewitt who escaped some trouble to get out of the inning without allowing any damage. Austin Buck, Michael Dunnigan, and Adam Albers all threw an inning in relief as well—with the Cardinals lone run of the game coming in the seventh inning when they strung together a few hits off of the freshman Dunnigan.
The Lions hit the diamond for the third straight day tomorrow as they welcome St. Anslem to Thomas B. Southard Stadium for the first of a two game set.
