Lions Use Five-run Ninth Inning to Win Sixth Straight
LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Saint Leo (7-2) topped the West Alabama Tigers (2-6) by a score of 9-4 after the Lions rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth inning. The win marks the Lions' sixth consecutive victory as Sean O'Connor's squad improves their overall record to 7-2.
Chris Newcomb, Daniel Torres, and Ryan Brnovich all collected three hits on the night and combined for six of eight of the team's total hits on the night. Bobby Twitty and Newcomb both collected three RBI—with Newcomb scoring two runs for the Lions as well.
"We came up clutch when we had to," O'Connor said postgame. "It wasn't a pretty game by any stretch. Charlie Neely was great. He was outstanding the whole game. We did a lot of things wrong, but when it came down to crunch time in the eighth and ninth innings—we got it done."
The sloppy game that saw a total of seven errors between the two teams was knotted at four runs a piece entering the top of the ninth inning. The Lions loaded the bases after Torres drilled a double to centerfield and Vitale and Perez both drew walks. Newcomb, who already had a double in the game, ripped a double down the left-field line into the corner that brought home all three runs.
Two batters later, Twitty doubled off the right-center field wall to bring home Newcomb and Frank Rawdow to take a 9-4 lead.
Charles Neely was superb on the mound once again—this time racking up 10 strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings on the hill. Neely gave up just two earned runs and two walks on the start.
Coming out of the bullpen to throw the eighth and ninth innings was Matthew Hewitt—who tossed two innings of flawless baseball to earn his first win of the season.
The Lions get back in action with a doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. EST.
