FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Behind a two home run night from Nova Southeastern leadoff hitter Carlos Asuaje, the host Sharks defeated Saint Leo 3-1 in Sunshine State Conference baseball action on Friday night from South Florida.
It was a night where pitching dominated all but two innings as both starters had stellar outings.
Saint Leo scored their only run on a fielding miscue in the fourth inning from Nova Southeastern (21-6, 6-3 SSC) when the Shark third baseman tried to turn a Lion bunt into a double play. After getting the lead runner at third his throw to first was wide, allowing Michael Revell to slide safely into home.
Asuaje would hit the first of his round-trippers in the bottom of the fifth as he took the first pitch of the inning and deposited it over the right field wall. A walk later in the inning would later come around to score on a two-out RBI single to give NSU the lead.
The NSU second baseman would hit his second dinger in the bottom of the eighth to widen the host's gap to 3-1.
Saint Leo (19-13, 3-7 SSC) could not capitalize on a nice outing by starter Rick Teasley, who tossed 6.2 innings and only surrendered two runs on 118 pitches. Matthew Hewitt came in for the final few innings of relief work.
NSU starter Zach Wescott went the distance for the Sharks, not allowing an earned run and only five hits in exactly 100 pitches.
The Lions will look to draw even in the conference series when the two teams square off in doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon. The Lions and Sharks will get game one underway at 1 p.m. at the NSU Baseball Complex. For the latest news, information, and updates on the baseball team, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
