SAINT LEO, Fla. – Despite an amazing extra-inning effort by Marshall Stalvey, the Saint Leo baseball team could not manage any wins in their SSC series with Nova Southeastern.  The Lions found themselves on the wrong sides of 20-4 and a 10-inning 3-1 decision in doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon.

After an underwhelming game one, Saint Leo Head Coach Russ McNickle turned to Marshall Stalvey as his second-game starter to try and stop the Nova Southeastern scoring machine that has just pounded out 24 hits and 20 runs.  Stalvey came through in a big way for the Lions as he only allowed the visiting Sharks a lone run in the seven innings of regulation.

Seven innings wasn’t enough for either team, or for Stalvey as the game carried past even a normal nine-inning game.  The senior ended up tossing 10 innings, but one swing of the bat in the 10th put the visitors from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on top.

Daniel Petitbon’s two-run homer over the left-field wall in the top of the 10th gave the Sharks the lead that Saint Leo could not come back from.

Stalvey (0-2) finished the day giving up three runs on seven hits.  He fanned 11 batters while only walking one even though he picked up the loss.

For the day, Dustin Brown went a combined 4-for-8 with a triple and an RBI.

The Lions will now play a midweek, rescheduled contest as Valdosta State University visits Saint Leo on Monday night.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
