MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -The Barry University baseball team managed to remain perfect in Sunshine State Conference play as the host Buccaneers took a 7-0 win over the Lions on Friday night to open up a conference series at Feinbloom Field.
In a foreboding start, Barry’s Drew Dwelly jolted the Buccaneer offense by taking the 2-2 offering from Saint Leo starter Aaron Brandt over the center field fence to give them a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Adrian English walked and Dean Green then reached second on a dropped fly ball with English moving to third. Matt Petty collected two RBIs on a single up the middle and the Buccaneers posted a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
It was all Barry in the series-opener as, in the fifth; Green connected on a solo homer to centerfield to make it 4-0. In the sixth Barry tallied two more runs when Ryan Garcia lead off the inning on first on a hit by pitch then James Young doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. Garcia scored on a Harold Holness sacrifice fly then Young came across the plate as Green drew a bases loaded walk. After six, Barry held a commanding 6-0 lead.
A solo homerun down the left field line sealed the scoring for the Buccaneers in the seventh inning.
Despite the shutout, one Saint Leo starter managed to put together an impressive evening as Jason Hamm went a perfect 3-for-3 as the Lions actually out-hit the host Bucs 7-to-6.
Barry starting pitcher Manny Rodriguez (5-2) went eight innings and struck out six while only giving up seven hits. For the Lions, Aaron Brandt (2-4) tossed five innings and allowed six hits and six of the night’s seven runs.
The conference series continues tomorrow with the first game of a doubleheader starting at noon.
