MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team could not hold on to a late-inning, one-run lead as the Lions bullpen surrendered six runs in two innings as the Barry University Buccaneers rallied for an 8-3 victory in noon-conference action on Friday night.
It was Saint Leo tallying the first run of the game in third inning. Ryan Brnovich singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. After Barry starter Manny Rodriguez unleashed his first and only wild pitch of the contest, Brnovich moved to third and scored on a single to right field by Powers.
The Bucs answered right back in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the game on a two-RBI single by James Young to make it a 2-1 tilt. Drew Dwelly collected a one-out double down the left field line followed by a Chris Leon single to left. Green earned a free pass to first on a hit by pitch to load the bases for Young. After Young’s single, Petty ended the inning for Barry, grounding into a twin killing.
In the sixth inning, Saint Leo posted four hits off Rodriguez and two runs to reclaim the lead at 3-2. Jason Hamm started off the sixth with a single then scored on an Anthony Santa single down the right field line. Then Chris Newcomb rolled a two out single into center field, scoring Santa to give the Lions the 3-2 advantage.
For the second time on the game, the Bucs captured the lead less than three outs after they lost it. In the seventh, three different Saint Leo pitchers walked the bases loaded for Leon and he tied the game with sacrifice fly to left scoring Evan Ashley. Green then ripped his second double of the game down the first base line scoring Dwelly and Harold Holness to give Barry the 5-3 lead.
The Buccaneer offense was not finished as Barry added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the deal and make it an 8-3 game going into the top of the ninth. Adrian English started off the frame with a single through the left side and eventually crossed the plate on a Dwelly two-out single up the middle. Leon continued the two-out rally with a single through the left side to score Holness, and finally Green collected his third double of the night to score Dwelly. Leon was thrown out at home on the play to end the inning.
Barry University ace Manny Rodriguez toed the rubber and went eight complete, striking out 10, walking one and allowing only two earned runs.
For the Lions, a great outing by starter Aaron Brandt was all for nothing as he tossed six innings, only surrendering two runs. His 95 pitch outing forced Head Coach Russ McNickle his bullpen in the seventh.
Leadoff hitter Ryan Brnovich went 3-for-5 and Ryan Powers would go 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss.
The Lions will have a chance to draw even in the two-game series when they again face the Buccaneers tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Feinbloom Field on the Barry campus.
