SAINT LEO, Fla. – One of the Saint Leo baseball team’s biggest recruits for the upcoming 2011 season is also in high demand by Major League Baseball as National Letter of Intent signee Daniel Torres was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 46th round last week.
Torres, a stand-out catcher from Countryside High School, was honored as a Florida Coaches Association All-Star after his senior season, also being label as Pinellas County’s “best defensive catcher” according to the St. Petersburg Times when selecting him to their All-County team. He is also the only high school baseball player to be drafted out of his home county.
He is expected to play a big role for the Lions in the upcoming season as the Saint Leo coaching staff is excited about his addition to the lineup and the catching core.
As Torres, a late-round draftee enters Thomas B. Southard Stadium, another Lion leaving the SLU campus, joins a Major League franchise as Seth Fowler was picked up in a free agent signee in June.
