SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team (17-27) defeated Webber International 28-10 in a old-fashioned slugfest on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
Saint Leo scored 28 runs on 28 hits and blasted four home runs. Collectively, the Lions excelled in offense as sophomore Blake Turner was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, six RBI and two home runs. Freshman Myron Kirchner contributed with a 4-for-6 night with a run scored and five RBI. Eugene Garnett Jr. would blast a team high ninth home run of 2010 while going 4-for-5 scoring five times and driving in three runs. J.C. Suarez’s stolen base was his 16th of the year.
In addition to the hit show, SLU had an outstanding performance on the mound by starter Matt Hewitt as he got his first start since February. He tossed four innings allowing four runs on six hits while striking out one. The Lions’ bullpen pieced together five innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out five. Austin Buck (2-5) would get his second win of the season in Green and Gold.
The Warriors opened the game scoring two runs on back-to-back home runs by Lance Lozen and Nate Goldstein. However, the Lions would answer with four runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Brown, sacrifice fly by Garnett Jr. and single by Kirchner.
The Lions would never look back as they would score every inning after the third while posting six runs in the second and fifth inning. Although the Warriors would rally back, the eight runs throughout the game were not nearly enough to overcome the Lions' large lead. The Lions would get a hit and a run scored from every starter in the lineup.
Saint Leo will take the field again Friday, as they return to Sunshine State Conference action, in a series against SSC foe Nova Southeastern at the NSU Baseball Complex in Ft. Lauderdale. Friday’s first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
