SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team fell victim to the home run as SLU surrendered three two-run round-trippers in the Lions’ 11-4 loss to visiting Palm Beach Atlantic in non-conference action on Friday night at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
In a game that started as a pitcher’s duel, Saint Leo’s Marshall Stalvey and PBA’s Logan Thomas kept the game scoreless until the third inning, when a 1-0 pitch from Stalvey was deposited over the left field wall by leadoff hitter Scott Urbanek, putting the visitors up 2-0.
The Sailfish would use another two-run fourth inning to push the lead to 4-0 and then a Keith Clabaugh shot in the sixth had the visitors from West Palm Beach, Fla. on top 6-0.
Thomas continued to keep the SLU bats quiet through the first seven frames as the Lions would not crack their side of the scoreboard until a Eugene Garnett Jr. RBI groundout in the eighth.
A four-run eighth inning from the PBA bats, which featured their third two-run homer, sealed the game in the visitors’ favor.
Thomas (4-4) would tossed a complete game gem for the Sailfish as he threw 114 pitches, only allowing four runs on nine hits. He struck out seven Lions and did not allow a single free pass.
Stalvey (2-6) would toss five innings before giving way to senior reliever Seth Fowler. The junior Stalvey would pick up the loss behind 10 hits and six runs. He managed five strikeouts and just a single walk.
Three Lions had multiple hits as shortstop Ryan Powers went 2-for-4 with the Lions’ only home run in first game of the series.
Palm Beach first baseman Tony Livelsberger went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in the win.
Both teams will continue their regional series with doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Thomas B. Southard Stadium on the Saint Leo campus.
