SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Saint Leo baseball team will play host to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in a non-conference three-game series, with the first game set for Friday night at 6 p.m. Doubleheader action is set for Saturday with first pitch at 1:00 p.m. with the second game to follow after. In the series opener, the Lions look to put their five game losing streak to a halt.  

Last time Out…
Despite collecting 11 hits and plating seven runs, the Saint Leo baseball team could not overcome a Valdosta State 11-run first inning, as the Blazers were victorious ,18-7 last Tuesday from Billy Grant Field in Valdosta, Ga.   Leading the offensive charge for the Lions in the non-conference contest was Dustin Brown as he went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI. Eugene Garnett Jr. followed with his own 2-for-4 performance, smacking a triple and his team-leading sixth home run, to go along with four RBI. Ryan Brnovich and J.C. Suarez also collected two hits apiece, while Ware Hart, Jovanni Fiallo, Blake Turner, and Kory Wan each had base knocks. In total, four Lions registered multiple hits.

On the Mound…
Matt Smith (4-4) will take the mound on Friday night for the Green and Gold, making his 10th start of 2010.  Smith has accumulated an ERA of 6.79 in 57 innings, allowing 43 earned runs.  He is eight strikeouts away from exceeding a season personal best of 48 K’s.  Smith will be making his second appearance and first start against PBA.  Marshall Stalvey and Aaron Brandt will make the starts during the doubleheader on Saturday.  Combined, the two have six of the Lions 12 wins this season.  Brandt leads the Lions’ staff with an ERA of 4.70 in nine starts, allowing 23 earned runs while striking out 23.  Stalvey has been stellar on the mound this season for Saint Leo.  Making 11 appearances in his first year as a Lion, he has an ERA of five in 54 innings, allowing 30 runs and striking out a team high 51.

The Lions’ 403 hits ranks in the Top-25 in Division II.  The Lions rank 12th in the country in triples with 15, while JC Suarez and Dustin Brown ranking 14th with four triples.  SLU is 22nd in stolen bases with 70 and Ryan Powers’ 43 RBI is 45th in the country.  On the defensive side, the Lions infield has turned 40 double plays, two shy behind No. 1 Coker with 42.  The Lions round-out the Top 25 with a fielding percentage of .967.  Marshall Stalvey ranks in the Top 50 in Division II in strike outs with 51.

About the Sailfish…
PBA is an independent program from West Palm Beach, Fla.  The Sailfish enter the 2010 season under a new head coach, Hall of Fame catcher and 1986 World Series Champion Gary Carter.  With the beginning of a new era, Coach Carter looks to improve an organization that finished the 2009 campaign with a record of 10-36.  The Sailfish’s most notable wins have come against defending National Champions Lynn University, in which they own a 4-1 series edg .  Justin Sizemore is the Sailfish’s leading hitter with a batting average of .327, collecting 16 hits and 14 RBI.  The pitching staff is lead by Peter Graffeo who owns a record of 2-1and an ERA of 3.49 in 38.2 innings.
